During our 100th Anniversary year, the ACPA Governing Board is honored to announce the renaming of the Presidential Citation to the Anne S. Pruitt-Logan Presidential Citation.

Dr. Anne S. Pruitt was the 37th President of ACPA from 1976-1977 and was the first African American and eleventh woman to serve as ACPA President.

Dr. Pruitt-Logan’s career of contribution to higher education began at Howard University in 1950 as Resident Intern and Women’s Counselor. She later held the positions of Dean of Women and Dean of Students at Albany State College in Georgia and in a similar position at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. During her years at Fisk, her students helped to institute the Student Sit-ins and Freedom Rides that galvanized the non-violent Civil Rights protests.

Dr. Pruitt-Logan was hired as Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio in 1963 and over the next few years was promoted through several positions to eventually Professor of Education with tenure in 1974. Pruitt-Logan also served as Director of Counseling at Mather College of CWRU during 1970-72 and, the next year, Assistant Director of Career Planning at the Center for Student Development. In 1979, she accepted a position at The Ohio State University (OSU) as Associate Dean of the Graduate School and she was also appointed to a tenured professorship and graduate faculty status in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership. She was appointed Associate Provost, Office of Academic Affairs at OSU in 1984, and then she was named Director, Center for Teaching Excellence in 1986. In 1994 Pruitt-Logan began eight years of service at the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) in Washington, DC, first, as Dean in Residence and later as Scholar in Residence. In 1995 she was named Professor Emeritus of Educational Policy and Leadership.

Dr. Pruitt-Logan not only served as administrator and author but also was the major adviser for 14 doctoral studies and several master’s theses, has more than 60 major paper presentations and has published more than 40 articles, reprints, and books as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters including co-publishing Faithful to the Task at Hand: The Life of Lucy Diggs Slowe.

Dr. Pruitt-Logan’s contributions in ACPA began in the 1960s, including service as a member of the ACPA Task Force of Black Members on Professional Problems, Commission I: Administrative Leadership, Editorial Board of the Journal of College Student Personnel, Feasibility Task Force which addressed the possible merger of ACPA, NAWDC and NASPA, ACPA Secretary, and was elected as the 1976-1977 ACPA President. She has been recognized by ACPA many times as Annuit Coeptis Senior Professional, ACPA Senior Scholar, ACPA Senior Scholar Diplomate, and ACPA Diamond Honoree.  Dr. Pruitt-Logan has also been the recipient of many additional awards. They include awards from Central State University, the YWCA of Columbus, Ohio, Black Issues in Higher Education, The Ohio State University, Howard University Alumni Association, and the American Council on Education. In the 100th anniversary year of ACPA in 2024, the ACPA Pan African Network (PAN) also celebrates Anne S. Pruitt-Logan’s legacy by announcing the inaugural “Anne S. Pruitt Foundations Award” in recognition of her as a gifted educator, an accomplished administrator, and a passionate advocate for the underrepresented. The additional new award will honor and recognize a member or past member who has provided significant contribution and service to the Pan-African Network through areas of creativity, engagement, and retention.

We congratulate Dr. Pruitt-Logan on leading a life, engaging in a career, and leaving a legacy that is an inspiration for us all. It is our distinct pleasure to name the Anne S. Pruitt-Logan Presidential Citation in their honor.

The 2024 recipient(s) of the newly named Anne S. Pruitt-Logan Presidential Citation will be recognized at the ACPA24 Convention in Chicago, Illinois on 18-21 March 2024.
