Last week, we conducted a--well, not a survey, exactly--of high school and independent counselors, asking them what they thought about test-optional and test-free admission policies. This is more a testing of the waters of those interested enough and motivated enough to respond. So, before the fans of tests (who can do their own testing of the water at any time, of course), point this out, file this under "interesting, but not definitive.

If you’re like me, and you may be since you’re reading this post, you get ideas for apps , websites and services all the time. I know I do. What I am bad at is actually executing these ideas. Sometimes I write a little code, other times I buy a domain name that would fit my idea and then life happens and before you know it I have a bunch of folders, some code and domain names but no real sites to speak of.

Blog: Just Visiting Because of its sudden appearance, and because the world does not wait for us to figure out the best possible approach before the new semester starts, I am disinclined from being too judgmental about the different choices instructors are making on how to deal with ChatGPT being in the world. I think an outright ban, or any other approach that relies on surveillance, detection and punishment, is not a good idea because of what this signals to students about the underlying value

Blog: Higher Ed Gamma The Gartner hype cycle for AI-fueled text and image generation is currently at its peak of inflated expectations. Can the trough of disillusionment be far off? Forgive this post’s misleading title. I consider ChatGPT, the text generator, an ally, not an adversary. Think of all the things that the program can already do: Generate lists of bibliographical references.

This blog has been kindly written for HEPI by Dr Alex Bols, Deputy Chief Executive of GuildHE. The recent HEPI paper, Opportunities to improve university governance in England (HEPI Report 155), by Dr Alison Wheaton, is an insightful look into how we can improve university governance in England. It suggests that there have been recent moves towards more interactive governance, and that these rely on clarity of role as well as capacity and capability.

The alignment of Martin Luther King Day with the start of the spring semester has always seemed fortuitous to me. For a communication scholar, whenever the world takes a moment to reflect on great speeches is a win. In the “I Have a Dream Speech” it is easy to see that the message is created from the words, the context, the cadence, and the messenger.

There has been a lot of talk about ChatGPT in recent weeks and its usefulness (or not) in education in the last for weeks. John Naughton’s column in the Observer is good introduction to the topic. Much less has been written about the accompanying site called DALL-E which generates AI text from written images, or in their own words: “DALL·E is an AI system developed by OpenAI that can create original, realistic images and art from a short text description.
