Former U.S. representative Liz Cheney was cheered—and also protested—Sunday while giving the commencement speech at her alma mater, Colorado College.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that about half of the graduates turned their chairs and sat with the backs of their heads to Cheney, in apparent protest of her conservative views.
Her speech highlighted her history of serving in the House of Representatives, but refusing to join other Republicans in saying that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election.
“After the 2020 election, and the attack of Jan. 6, my fellow Republicans wanted me to lie,” Cheney said. “They wanted me to say the 2020 election was stolen, that the attack on Jan. 6 wasn’t a big deal, and that Donald Trump wasn’t dangerous. I had to choose between lying and losing my position in House leadership.”
