The award of doctorates in Divinity had ceased to depend on advanced scholarship, and had often became more or less honorific as new Bishops began to be granted an automatic Doctorate of Divinity. As the body responsible for research under the Higher Education and Research Act (2017), UK Research and Innovation offers its own definition.
