Despite high profile stories about the closing of small liberal arts colleges, such as California’s Mills College and Vermont’s Green Mountain College, college closures have actually declined in the past five years. For-profit operators ran more than 80 percent of the 861 institutions that ceased operations between 2004 and 2021.

In November, The Hechinger Report found 861 colleges had closed since 2004. Finlandia University is the latest school from a growing list this academic year to close its doors. The majority of those schools were also small private colleges with a theological background.

Between 2004 and 2017, the proportion of first-year students who spent more than 15 hours a week studying or otherwise preparing for class increased from 34 to 45 percent , but that still meant more than half of students spent 15 or fewer hours a week studying outside class.

When he co-founded the organization in 2004, it had 35 member campuses—which grew quickly to 200 and peaked in 2012 at about 1,200. “A teeny liberal arts college can’t make that investment.” Now the number sits at about 800, with three-quarters or more being colleges and universities.
