Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Best Colleges has tracked 39 school closures or mergers.

“You can create a net-zero campus pretty easily by just shutting it down,” quips Jay Antle, executive director of the Center for Sustainability and a history professor at Johnson County Community College, in Kansas. “Across many college campuses, sustainability took a back seat,” Nelson says.
