At the level of individual faculty members, a mix of hyperinflation and government neglect of higher education funding mean that there has been an extraordinary drop in academic pay: in some cases, over 90%. Higher education was not elitist. I’m thinking particularly of the engineer strike at Petroleos de Venezuela.
