Bergman was the first woman to lead the private liberal arts college when she stepped in in 2014. She was no stranger to Gustavus; she served on the Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2014 following the enrollment of her eldest son in 2003. Prior to her 18 years of executive leadership, Bergman had no career in academia.

Our founder, Benjamin Kurtz, sought a community that would sponsor such an endeavor, and Selinsgrove offered to help if he would also provide a traditional liberal-arts education to their sons and daughter who were not called to the ministry. These are the values of the Abrahamic religions, and they are the values of the liberal arts.
