Europe “lagging behind” in innovation and start-ups

Europe’s competitiveness in innovation and the practical application of scientific research is “lagging behind” the rest of the world, ministers told a conference of European universities on April 23. “Europe is still reasonably good in science, but it’s really lagging behind in valorising that science in industrial application,” said Michiel Scheffer, president of the board of the European Innovation Council.

Clatsop Community College has announced it will eliminate and restructure several staff positions in anticipation of a budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year. College leaders have been vocal about financial difficulties in the past year and estimate a deficit of over $900,000. Interim president Teena Toyas, along with Bill Meck, who is advising the college on finances, forecasted the need for layoffs at board meetings as early as February.
