Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles plans to cut six sports at the end of the 2023–24 season, according to a Wednesday news release. Sports targeted for cuts are men’s cross-country, men’s rowing, men’s track and field, women’s rowing, women’s swimming, and women’s track and field. One of the stark realities of growing older is the inevitable experience of increasingly grappling with the death of loved ones. For me, this experience is not only related to family members and close friends, but also to mentors, especially my former HBCU professors. Over the last several years, most of my former HBCU professors have passed away, and this has saddened me deeply.

There was big news this week. Back in 2021, The PIE published a long-form analysis of the student loans market and worrying allegations of impoverished international students in Canada turning to prostitution to make enough money to support themselves while there. An Indian agent at the time told us she believed fraudulent loans to suggest adequate funds for financial stability while in Canada were common “especially with Canada being so much less regulated for student visas”.

Faculty members at the California State University system, the nation’s largest four-year public university system, are planning to cancel classes and strike next week as they demand higher pay and better benefits. The California Faculty Association, which represents 29,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches, says it will begin a five-day strike on Monday, the first day of the spring semester for most students.

Campaigners are making positive strides in their efforts to make the UK the premier English language learning destination, as the government announced the expansion of its Youth Mobility Scheme. From January 31, the number of nationals from South Korea who can apply for visas via the scheme each year will increase from 1,000 to 5,000 and the age limit will also go up from 18-30, to 18-35.
